On May 15th, I got an early call to fill in for the Ip Director operator on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. The op had a family emergency and the job needed to be filled. Luckily, I was able to change my schedule around to be able to help out.
When I got the El Capitan Theater where the show is broadcast from I went strait to work. This is a show I had filled in on last year working the same position. The production crew has been with Jimmy for years. They know how to adapt to changes and to put on the best show possible. I was glad to be there and to be able to help out.
My task was to Operate the IP Director software. That means that I was responsible for all the Camera stream, Program feeds, and backup’s be able to Record their assigned feeds. Each had to be Labeled correctly, formated properly, and ready to go for the show.
The show is recorded live to discs a few hours before it is broadcast live. The reasoning for that is for there is a need for timing, quality control, potential video inserts, and there is a chance for final touches to be added. As the show got underway I set up the segment records across all the multiple injest channels. Then it was air time.
It is a fast and furious show. Since it is live, anything can happen and it usually does. Segments go long or short, guests do wild things, ect. You need to be on your toes and adapt.
It all went well. The show came together and I was glad to be a part of it. I’m looking forward to the next event. Hopefully I will have more than a few hours notice!
